I have made lots of tiny mitered squares, and maybe you have too. I love how the two-colored ones make that beautiful 90-degree striped curve! I started wondering what would happen if I made a blanket using one big mitered square instead of lots of little ones, and this pattern is the answer to that question.

The name is kind of a play on words for a concept in physics and geometry. Positive curvature is what happens to parallel lines on a sphere. Think of the lines of longitude on the globe and how they get closer together near the poles. Astronomers say it is also one possibility for how the universe is shaped, which I find fascinating!

Once you get started, Positive Curvature is an easy knit but one that is fun as well. It’s knit in garter stitch for maximum squishiness and because garter stitch will give you a square blanket whereas stockinette may not. It’s appropriate for an advanced or adventurous beginner.

Yarn
You’ll need two contrasting colorways of worsted-weight yarn. C1 should be a semi-solid or tonal colorway. C2 should be a Splashed & Speckled colorway or another semi-solid/tonal colorway. A Splashed & Speckled colorway is a variegated colorway dyed with short and seemingly random color sections. This sort of colorway isn’t likely to pool.

I used Sunflower for C1 and Day at the Beach for C2 on Purple Lamb’s Squoosh Worsted for the sample.

Yardage
The amount of yarn you need depends on the size of the blanket you want to make. Here’s the information for 6 different sizes ranging from lovey all the way up to afghan:

  • 15” square lovey – 340 yards for C1 and 313 yards for C2
  • 30” square carseat blanket – 678 yards for C1 and 626 yards for C2
  • 35” square baby blanket – 791 yards for C1 and 731 yards for C2
  • 42” square large receiving blanket – 950 yards for C1 and 877 yards for C2
  • 50” square throw blanket – 1130 yards for C1 and 1044 yards for C2
  • 60” square Afghan – 1357 yards for C1 and 1252 yards for C2

Needles & Notions

  • Size 8 US/ 5 mm circular needles with a length that is approximately that same as one side of your blanket
  • Two stitch markers, at least one of which is removable
