Field of Flowers is a top-down crescent shawl that uses assigned pooling yarn to create a beautiful organic field of flowers.
Assigned Pooling
Assigned pooling colorways are made to be used with assigned pooling patterns. About three-quarters of the hank (loop of yarn) is dyed in one color, which is known as the main color. The other quarter of the hank is dyed in a contrasting color, which is known as the accent color. When you get to the accent color, you do a different stitch as specified in the pattern to showcase the accent color. In the case of this pattern, you’ll be making aster flowers whenever you get to the accent color in your working yarn.
Yarn
You’ll need 2 skeins or between 800 and 1000 yards of fingering-weight yarn dyed for assigned pooling. That means about ¾ of the yarn is dyed in one color or color combination while the other ¼ is dyed in a different color or set of colors. The ¼ portion is known as the accent color, and that’s where the magic happens with assigned pooling. I used Purple Lamb’s Monet’s Water Lilies colorway dyed on Sock Perfection for the sample, buy any assigned pooling colorway on any fingering-weight yarn will work. I designed the pattern with just one colorway in mind.
