One day when I went to my knitting group, I found that I could chat or I could knit, but I couldn’t do both at once. Tell me I’m not the only one!

The pattern I was working on that day involved a lot of counting, and I got to thinking how nice it would be to have a pattern that is interesting to knit and pretty to wear but doesn’t involve counting. So, I came up with the Knit and Chat Infinity Scarf and Cowl. It’s knit in the round, and each round just involves doing one stitch or stitch combination, so there’s no need to count after you cast on. It’s appropriate for an advanced beginner. You can choose the infinity scarf or the cowl, or you can make one of each!


The pattern uses a suri alpaca lace like my Suri Lace Cloud and a soft sock-weight yarn like my own So Silky Fingering, Dream Sock, or Sock Perfection. Most of the time, the two yarn bases are held together, but for some rounds you just use one or the other.

Update
I updated the pattern in February of 2026, dividing the cowl from the infinity scarf, changing the bind-off, and making the cowl taller.

Needles and Notions
  • US Size 6 / 4 mm circular needles that are 36 inches in length for the infinity scarf OR US Size 6 / 4 mm circular needles that are 24 inches in length for the cowl
  • One stitch marker

Yarn

  • Approximately 260 yards of a sock-weight yarn, like Sock Perfection, So Silky Sock, or Dream Sock
  • Approximately 200 yards of Suri Lace Cloud or a fuzzy kid mohair yarn
