ODYSSEUS Hand-Dyed Silky Merino Sock Yarn - Odyssey Yarn Collection

Regular price $29.00

Introducing The Odyssey collection!

I'm so very happy to bring you this collection that combines an amazing luxury yarn made of superwash merino/silk/cashmere fingering-weight yarn with the characters from Homer's Odyssey.

This colorway was inspired by Odysseus, the hero known for his wit and wisdom who spends ten years at war against the Trojans and another ten years trying to get home through many adventures. His colors include gold for wisdom, copper for understanding, red for courage, green for hope, blue for loyalty, purple for royalty, and gray for his many trials.

I made four different colorways based on the personalities of the four main characters. Each colorway shares a couple colors with the other colorways so you can use them all together or in any combination.

The base yarn has great stitch definition along with incredible softness. This is a true luxury yarn that will be beautiful for anything next to the skin.

I created a colorway for each of these four main characters:
ODYSSEUS - known for his cleverness, he is the one who came up with the Trojan horse that made it possible for the Greeks to win the war in The Iliad. After being away for ten years for the war, it took him another ten years to come home to his wife and son during which he had many adventures and misadventures.

PENELOPE - Odysseus' faithful wife who is being besieged by suitors who are eating her out of house and home. She is in an impossible situation between the Greek virtue of hospitality, the fact that she really has no role in society without a husband, and her desire to be faithful to her husband who may still be alive. Everyone assumes Odysseus is dead, and she finally tells them that she will choose one to marry after she has finished weaving her father-in-law's burial cloth as her final duty to Odysseus. By day she weaves it, but by night she unweaves it.

TELEMACHUS - The young man who is the only son of Odysseus and Penelope. At the beginning of the epic, he lacks courage and is terribly depressed by the impossible situation, but as the book progresses he grows more like his father with the help of Athena, who appears to him in disguise.

ATHENA - the goddess of wisdom, weaving, and war who helps Odysseus to get home and helps Telemachus to gain courage.

PROCESS AND PACKAGING
Each skein of yarn is spun or dyed by me with loving care and contains a label with the yarn facts shown above. Your yarn is wrapped in tissue paper and shipped promptly, making a great presentation if you are giving it as a gift to your favorite fiber artist--even if that happens to be you!

HANK OR CAKE
Unless otherwise specified, your yarn will come as a hank, which is basically a large loop. This is the best way to store yarn because there’s no tension being placed on it. Before you begin to use it, however, you will need to wind it into a ball or cake or you will end up with a tangled mess. The best way to do this is with a swift and ball winder. However, you can use the arms of a patient friend or just put your yarn over two dining chairs back to back and wind it into a ball by hand. If you don’t have a swift and you plan to use the yarn fairly soon, I would be happy to wind your yarn into a cake for you at no extra charge. Just mention it in your note to seller when you check out.

MY GIFT TO YOU
As a token of my appreciation, I would be happy to include your choice of either a sprig of fresh rosemary from my organic garden or a handmade felt ball infused with essential lavender oil with your order.  Both of these smell wonderful and are natural moth deterrents. Just let me know if you would like one and which one you would prefer in the note to seller when you check out.
Happy fiber artistry!
