CAPTAIN AHAB - Dyed to Order

Regular price $25.00

"His whole high, broad form, seemed made of solid bronze, and shaped in an unalterable mould, like Cellini's cast Perseus. Threading its way out from among his grey hairs, and continuing right down one side of his tawny scorched face and neck, till it disappeared in his clothing, you saw a slender, rod-like mark, lividly whitish."

                                  --Herman Melville, Moby-Dick

No collection of Moby-Dick would be complete without Captain Ahab whose character is synonymous with monomania.

I dyed Captain Ahab as part of my Moby-Dick collection, and I used the quote above as my inspiration. Captain Ahab (the yarn, that is) has some white for the scar, red for Ahab's skin, gray for his hair, and bronze for, well, for his being. I also added a bit of blue for the sea, because Ahab wouldn't be Ahab without it.

Every colorway in this collection has the same sea blue, and I dyed them on my Sock Perfection yarn base.

Among the photos, you can find one of a small sample I knit up using US Size 2 needles. There's also the Leif Bolero knit for me by a friend using Captain Ahab.

QUANTITY AVAILABLE
Since this listing is for yarn dyed to order, the quantity available is shown as zero because I don't have it in stock until I dye it for you. You can still place an order for as many as you would like.

I strongly recommend ordering as many as you will need for your project because my colorways do vary a bit from one dye batch to the next.

TURNAROUND TIME
You can expect me to dye and ship your order within 2-3 weeks once you have placed your order. I will email you to keep you informed of my progress.

YARN BASES
Here are the yarn bases you can choose from and some information about each one:

Sparkly Merino Sock - This 4-ply yarn is made of 92% superwash merino and 8% lurex. There's enough lurex to really sparkle without compromising the softness of the merino. The neat thing about lurex is that the sparkle shows even more on darker colorways. This comes in extra-large 115 gram or 4-ounce skeins with a total of 409 yards, so it's on the heavier side of fingering weight. Sparkly Merino Sock tends to dye up brightly. This can be hand washed or washed on a gentle cycle in the washing machine on cold. It should be laid flat to dry.

So Silky Sock - This yarn is lusciously soft! It's a 4-ply made of 50% mulberry silk and 50% superwash merino. It comes in 3.5 ounce or 100 gram skeins with a total of 438 yards per skein. So Silky Sock tends to dye up fairly softly. I recommend washing it by hand in cold water because of the silk content, though there's nothing that will felt in this yarn.

Sock Perfection - I have finally found the perfect yarn base for actual socks! It is a light fingering weight that combines 80% extra-fine 19.5 micron superwash merino with 20% nylon. It's a good solid 4-ply yarn that comes in 100 gram skeins with 450 yards per skein. It can be machine washed on cold and air dried. It tends to take the dye rather brightly.

Squoosh DK - Squoosh DK is a squishy, soft, stretchy yarn made of 100% extra-fine superwash merino. It's a 4-ply yarn that comes in extra-large 115 gram skeins with 250 yards. This can be machine or hand washed in cold water but should be air dried.

Buttery Soft DK - This is a wonderfully soft 2-ply DK base with great stitch definition. It's made of 45% extra-fine merino (non-superwash), 45% baby alpaca, and 10% silk. It is a dream to work with! Each 100 gram skein contains 245 yards. This should be washed by hand in cold water and dried flat. Buttery Soft DK dyes up softly.

PROCESS AND PACKAGING
Each skein of yarn is spun or dyed by me with loving care and contains a label with the yarn facts shown above. Your yarn is wrapped in tissue paper and shipped promptly, making a great presentation if you are giving it as a gift to your favorite fiber artist--even if that happens to be you!

HANK OR CAKE
Unless otherwise specified, your yarn will come as a hank, which is basically a large loop. This is the best way to store yarn because there’s no tension being placed on it. Before you begin to use it, however, you will need to wind it into a ball or cake or you will end up with a tangled mess. The best way to do this is with a swift and ball winder. However, you can use the arms of a patient friend or just put your yarn over two dining chairs back to back and wind it into a ball by hand. If you don’t have a swift and you plan to use the yarn fairly soon, I would be happy to wind your yarn into a cake for you at no extra charge. Just mention it in your note to seller when you check out.

MY GIFT TO YOU
As a token of my appreciation, I would be happy to include your choice of either a sprig of fresh rosemary from my organic garden or a handmade felt ball infused with essential lavender oil with your order.  Both of these smell wonderful and are natural moth deterrents. Just let me know if you would like one and which one you would prefer in the note to seller when you check out.
